Located along the calm waters of the Kaelepulu Stream in Kailua, **Windward Kai Canoe Club** is a family-oriented organization dedicated to preserving the sport of Hawaiian outrigger canoe paddling. For over 29 years, the club has served the Windward community by blending competitive spirit with a deep respect for Hawaiian culture. For parents, Windward Kai offers a supportive and accessible entry into ocean sports. Unlike some larger, high-pressure clubs, Windward Kai prides itself on a welcoming atmosphere where every paddler—regardless of experience—gets the opportunity to race. Their dedicated youth program, **Kaiheo (Nā 'Ōpio)**, is specifically designed for students in grades 3 through 12, focusing on water safety, paddling technique, and the cultural significance of the *waʻa* (canoe). Practices are conveniently located on the canal before the bridge to Kailua Beach Park, offering a safe, protected environment for beginners to learn before venturing into the open ocean. **Program Highlights:** * **Kaiheo Youth Program:** Open to students in **Grades 3–12**, running from **December through February**. * **Practice Schedule:** Youth practices are typically held **Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:00 PM**, making it easy to fit into after-school schedules. * **Regatta Season:** Following the winter youth season, the main **HCRA Regatta Season** runs from **March through August**, open to paddlers ages 8 and up. * **Affordable Access:** Youth season dues are approximately **$120**, covering association fees, equipment use, and regatta entry. * **No Equipment Needed:** The club provides paddles for new youth members, removing the barrier to entry for families just starting out. * **Location:** 500 Kawainui St, Kailua, HI (Practices launch from the canal/Kaelepulu Stream, just before the bridge to Kailua Beach Park).
