About

New Hope Canoe Club was established in October 1999, when founders Kimo Taylor and Kaipo Turco challenged the then-Head Coach of Kailua Canoe Club to assemble a Molokai Channel race crew with only weeks to spare. Driven by faith, the newly formed team borrowed a canoe and successfully crossed the Ka Iwi Channel. After a successful two-year partnership racing under the Kai Oni Canoe Club banner, New Hope achieved full OHCRA membership in 2003. The club initially raced the loaned koa canoe Kaiholokai—courtesy of Hui Lanakila’s Leighton Look—before purchasing its own historic vessel, Kai Elua, from Uncle Wally Froiseth. From these humble beginnings, New Hope has competed across Hawaii and as far away as New York’s Hudson River. Today, the club is dedicated to sharing its fleet with schools and families for racing, practice, and community ceremonies.
