Leeward Kai Canoe Club
About
Located on the shores of Nānākuli, **Leeward Kai Canoe Club** offers one of West Oʻahu’s most historic and respected youth paddling programs. Established in 1967 by the Van Gieson family, this 501(c)(3) non-profit uses the ocean as a classroom to teach the next generation the ancient art of Hawaiian outrigger canoe paddling (*hoe waʻa*). For parents looking for a program that instills character, Leeward Kai is built on a foundation of "tough love" and cultural pride. The club’s primary mission is to provide a positive, disciplined outlet for the *keiki* (youth) of the Leeward coast. Athletes here don't just learn to paddle; they learn the values of **Lōkahi** (Unity), **Haʻahaʻa** (Humility), and **Hoʻomau** (Perseverance) under the guidance of experienced mentors. **Program Highlights:** * **Youth Ages:** Competitive and recreational programs typically starting at age 10+ (Keiki divisions). * **Seasons:** Offers both Regatta (Sprint) and Long Distance seasons, keeping athletes active year-round. * **Cultural Focus:** Athletes learn proper protocols, canoe maintenance, and the history of the sport. * **Community:** A strong 'Ohana atmosphere where families are encouraged to get involved.
