About

Kumulokahi Elks Canoe Club is a unique fixture in Honolulu’s paddling scene, operating as a committee of the historic **Honolulu Elks Lodge 616**. Unlike many independent clubs, Kumulokahi was founded with a specific mission to serve the community’s youth, originally providing opportunities for underprivileged and at-risk teens. Today, that spirit of inclusiveness remains the club’s heartbeat. Located centrally at the **Magic Island Canoe Halau**, the club offers a safe, accessible, and supportive environment where young athletes ("keiki" and "‘ōpio") learn the discipline of Hawaiian outrigger canoeing while being mentored by experienced community leaders. The club prides itself on living the Elks' motto: *"Elks Care, Elks Share."* This philosophy translates into a program that values character development as much as competitive results. While they compete vigorously in the **Na ‘Ohana O Na Hui Wa‘a** association regattas, the focus is heavily placed on teamwork, ocean safety, and respect. For parents, this means a program that is less about "win at all costs" and more about raising good citizens through the rigor and joy of ocean sports. **Program Highlights:** * **Prime Location:** Practices are held at the **Magic Island Canoe Halau** (Diamond Head end of Ala Moana Beach Park), offering convenient access for Town-side families. * **Youth Focus:** Strong "Na ‘Opio" (Youth) program that typically runs during the winter season (November–February) and the main Regatta season (Summer). * **Inclusive Atmosphere:** Known for welcoming paddlers of various skill levels and backgrounds, keeping true to their charitable roots. * **Community Connection:** As part of the Elks Lodge, the club often participates in unique community service events, such as "Paddle Out for HUGS" for families with seriously ill children.
