Hui Nalu O Hawaii Canoe Club
About
Founded in 1908 by the legendary Duke Kahanamoku and two friends, **Hui Nalu Canoe Club** ("Club of the Waves") is one of Hawaii’s most historic and respected ocean sports organizations. Located at Maunalua Bay in Hawaiʻi Kai, the club is more than just a place to paddle; it is a community hub dedicated to the vision of "coming together as a family who shares and cares." For parents, Hui Nalu offers a structured, supportive environment where youth athletes are mentored not just in competitive racing, but in the values of leadership, teamwork, and cultural stewardship. The club’s youth program is renowned for its depth and organization, offering specific coaching for every age group from the 12-and-under "Keiki" divisions up to elite 18-and-under crews. Practices are held in the calm, protected waters of the bay, providing an ideal classroom for beginners to master their stroke before advancing to open ocean conditions. Whether your child is looking to race competitively in the OHCRA circuit or simply connect with the ocean, Hui Nalu provides a pathway for personal achievement and lifelong friendships. **Program Highlights:** * **2025 Season Start:** The official Regatta Season for youth begins the week of **March 31, 2025**. * **Structured Coaching:** Distinct practice schedules for specific age groups (e.g., Boys/Girls 12 & Under typically practice Mon/Wed/Fri afternoons) ensure personalized attention. * **Year-Round Opportunities:** Beyond the summer Regatta season, the club offers a Distance Season (Aug–Oct) and an active Off-Season Paddling (OSP) program for continued fitness. * **Community Focus:** Athletes participate in stewardship days, such as loʻi maintenance, reinforcing the connection between the paddler and the land (*ʻāina*).
